85 Broads was also focused. As a networking platform, it existed for one reason: to solve problems for its members, be it funding or a board position or guidance on how to get promoted. It was not trying to be all things to anyone seeking to connect with a former Wall Street executive for social interaction or networking opportunities.
Expert Insights: Pursue Your Passion
Getting to know other people and breaking through the awkwardness of initial introductions is always easier when the connections are made with shared purpose or interest. For novelist Aidan Donnelley Rowley, it is her massive love of books—not simply writing them but the bigger joy that comes from sharing her passion for reading with others. Back when her first book, Life After Yes , 19 was on the verge of hitting the bookshelves, Aidan launched Happier Hours, 20 a modern literary salon. I remember the very first event: Aidan’s apartment was absolutely jammed with enthusiastic book lovers who were delighted to discover fellow members of their tribe. Aidan’s passion for books, and not the guarantee of a packed event, is the engine that drives Happier Hours. Networking tip: undertake your own community-building efforts because you care really deeply about the subject matter or topic, not with the aim of a definite outcome or result.
Q: When did you launch Happier Hours? Who attends?
Aidan : I launched Happier Hours in March 2009. My guests are a diverse group of women in a broad range of careers. I would say that their one commonality is that they love books and love to connect over books and the conversations they inspire.
Q: Why did you launch Happier Hours, and what’s happened since then?
Aidan : When I originally launched Happier Hours I was anticipating the publication of my first novel, and I began hosting the events as a means of meeting and communing with fellow writers and creative people in the New York City area. Also, I missed the deep, edifying discussions about books and ideas that were common in my college and law-school days but not as much in my new life as a young mother. Since its inception, Happier Hours has evolved in wonderful ways I could never have predicted. Today, these evenings are all about interesting and interested women connecting face-to-face, in an increasingly digital world, about great books and meaningful topics.
Q: Who are the members of the Happier Hours community? Can you describe a “typical” attendee of this modern literary salon?
Aidan : What I love, and celebrate, is that there is really no “typical” attendee. Certainly, there are many members of the publishing community—writers and editors and agents and publicists—but there is also a broad, eccentric range of attendees, from fellow mothers at my girls’ schools to producers of Broadway plays to news anchors and banking titans. There are no rules at all about who should come, and who does, and this is what makes these nights so vibrant and unique.
Q: Happier Hours is now in New York City and in LA.
